Free Ways to Workout at Home (or While Traveling)

Hello dear friends! I’m really excited to share this post on Free Ways to Workout at Home (or While Traveling). It’s honestly been both challenging and exciting finding new ways to get fit without my gym or my yoga studio. It’s not a secret I’m a yoga junky. I love my studio and was there up until the last possible day we were told to Stay Home.

After, I panicked. I didn’t really know what to do with myself. I live comfortably in my 1 bedroom apartment in Seattle. It’s cozy and my lovely sanctuary. The last thing I want to do is put a rowing machine in the middle of it. So, I decided to get creative and find other methods of fitness to try.

5 FREE WAYS TO WORKOUT AT HOME

Free Ways to Workout at Home (or While Traveling)!

These ideas are semi-obvious but also concepts that have worked for me. I’d love to hear what you’ve been doing to stay fit at home and to share with the On the Trip Side community.

Let’s get into it!

UPDATED: April 15th, 2021

One // Free Apps

Apps are not for everyone. I’m the first to admit that but my all time favorite app that’s been getting me through this pandemic is Strava. What I love about this free app is: It’s social, interactive and you can choose from an array of workouts to track. You also earn trophies every month for challenges you can sign up for. I’m currently learning to run a 10k!

Here are a few other free apps!

  • Strava – Personal Favorite
  • Zombies, Run! – Run from Zombies and try to get get to shelters to collect supplies to survive the apocalypse. (Disclaimer: I haven’t used this app but I’ve heard tons of great things from friends.)
  • Daily Butt Training – A great app for a large muscle focus area. You pick the time and the challenge. Hit “Play” to get toned!
  • 30 Day Squat Challenge – Takes you from day 1 to 30 and has different levels to help you on your work out quest.
  • Couch to 5K – Great recovery program but also perfect for those just starting to relearn to run.

Two // Youtube fitness

Workout videos, for free? Yes, please! These are my top favorite free videos from Youtube. Though Amazon Prime has a subscription, as a bonus, I’m adding a few of their videos as well.

Three // Virtual Workout Group

I got this idea from one of my best friends who is a fitness enthusiast. She has a group of ladies that take the lead once a week and acts as the fitness circuit trainer for their group. Easy to make a facebook group for too.

  1. Find 3-4 amazing women who love to work out and will keep you accountable.
  2. Start a facebook group or an email chain.
  3. Rotate taking turns building a home circuit training.
  4. Provide 4-6 trainings and repeat 2-3 times each.
  5. It’s fun, interactive and you can hold each other accountable.
  6. Bonus points for sharing and creating a hashtag!

Four // Trial Apps

This one only lasts for so long but give you a time limit to see if you’re actually interested in investing your time and money into an app program.

  • Daily Burn – 60 days free, then $19.95/month. I have not personally tried this program but I’ve heard great things from friends.
  • Peloton – 90 days free, then $12.99/mo. The ever popular peloton is sweeping the nation. Don’t have one? They have other workouts available through their app! Including yoga, bootcamp, outdoor running and mediation.
  • Alo – 14 days free, then $20/mo. If you’re an advanced yogi or wanting to finally learn, this is the app for you. Their classes are amazing and totally zen worthy.
  • Kayla Itsines – 7 days free, then $19.95/mo. Have you heard of the famous BBG? I have it and love it, when I use it. This app is supposed to be even better. I have 3 girlfriends who swear by it and it’s worth the yearly price after the trial.
  • Borrow from a friend/family member – Peloton yoga (normally $12.99/month)

Five // Pinterest

You guys, I think we’ve forgotten how resourceful pinterest can be for us. There are tons of free circuits, motivations and memes. Below are a few favorite pins, but first, my personal fitness motivation board.

Bonus // Share Log-ins with Friends and Family

Maybe this is cheating. Maybe this is breaking the rules. Here’s what I know: it’s a really rough time right now for a lot of people. Many are in a place of uncertainty. I don’t see anything wrong with borrowing a friend’s account as a trial or splitting the cost of something between friends.

I hope you all enjoyed these 5 Free Ways to Workout at Home (or While Traveling). I’d love to know your favorite apps, other ideas and fitness routines you do on a daily basis.

Stay happy, healthy and safe. 💗

These are some great suggestions! I’ve been looking for some good workout from home tips so I’ll have to try some of these out.

These are all great. I LOVE the Kettlebell workout. Plus you don’t need it, you can just grab a water bottle and use that as your weights, if you’re just starting out. 16oz of water is about 1lb!

I thought I would find it very difficult to motivate myself to workout at home during the lockdown, but found it surprisingly easy. I think it is mostly because I can choose when to work out rather than having to push myself to do it after I come back from work as I would do normally.

These are definitely some great tips, I am mostly finding my workouts at YouTube – absolutely loving PopSugar! – but apps are also a great way.

I hope you can go back to your yoga studio safely soon!

    xx A.

Yes yes yes! I really miss my yoga studio. Working out after work was always so hard for me. However, with WFH, I’m able to get outside a lot easier and faster. It helps that its Spring and the sun goes down a lot later. Stay healthy, Anna! 💖
