Book Review Round-Up (#32)

Well, hello there from Edinburgh, Scotland! This Book Review Round-Up (#32) isn’t as large as the last three because I’ve been planning, traveling, and touring throughout Ireland and Scotland this past week and a half. It’s much more difficult to listen to audiobooks when you’re using your phone to Google “Why is Edinburgh Castle so high up?” and “Are leprechauns really protected by the European Union?” (spoiler: they are!)

In short, this review is exponentially fun to write as I sit in my hotel room with a full view of Edinburgh Castle.

Book Review Round-Up (#32)

Per usual… the goals!

  • Listen to 4 audiobooks a month
    • I listened to 4!
  • Try different book genres
    • Not great this month but not terrible.
      • 2 Witchy Romances for Halloween
      • Cozy Spicy Mystery Romance
      • Bookish Romance
  • Books with POC as the MC (main character) 👩🏻👩🏼👩🏽‍🦳👩🏽👩🏾
    • 1 out of 5 books.
    • Aka 20% of books… I’d love to see this at 50% one of these months.

Witchful Thinking by Celestine Martin

Format: Audiobook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

This is a me problem. I couldn’t get into the Merman concept. It just wasn’t for me.

Other than that, I love a good witchy tale, especially during Autumn. I loved Lucy’s relationship with her family and how the wish spell kept putting her in awkward situations. It made the book fun. There are multiple couples you’re rooting for in this book but you definitely want Lucy and Alex’s second chance at romance to happen.

I wish I had picked up the physical copy of this book, unfortunately. I liked the story but the different narrators had me mixing up the characters.

At the Coffee Shop of Curiosities by Heather Webber

Format: Physical Book | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

This is my third Heather Moore book and in total honesty, I connected with the two other books more. That doesn’t take away from how cute this book is though! I genuinely liked it.

It had the perfect recipe for a good book. A small town with quirky neighbors, a tiny touch of magic (just enough to keep you interested), and it takes place in a coffee shop! Not to mention found family, hallmark, and it’s a nice duel perspective but not who’d you’d think!

The ending was unique enough and I have to admit, I didn’t see it coming.

Nevermoore Bookstore by Kerrigan Byrne

Format: Physical Book | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

What a great little PNW cozy spicy mystery! If you’re from Seattle or the PNW, well, this one was made for you. I won’t lie, I was confused as to why this guy was just stalking her at all times and had his whole heart and soul into it, out of nowhere, but the ending made for it.

This is definitely a spicy romance and even though I was surprised how it came around, it was still a super fun read for Autumn!

Meet Me in the Margins by Melissa Ferguson

Format: Physical Book | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

This is one of those books I walked in with a lot of expectations. I think I wanted it to be like The Hating Game from last month’s reviews but I wasn’t. Savannah has low self-esteem and that’s primarily due to the fact that her long-time boyfriend dumped her and proposed to his sister.

I had a tough time connecting with the characters except for when they were together pretending to be signing agents. Haha! Which was such a cute scene. Other than that, there was a lot of foreshadowing. There wasn’t any spice to it, which I think I was looking for. If you’re in your 20s looking for a cute hallmark book, this is for you.

Witches Get Stuff Done by Molly Harper

Format: eBook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

I really liked the writing and the style of this book. The issue with everything being on an island is I keep thinking it’s one of the islands on the Puget Sound but I think it’s actually in Maine. Either way, I’d love to visit this quirky little town.

There were a lot of unique ideas I really enjoyed. The first is that the house is completely haunted and I didn’t realize that when I got this eARC from NetGalley but it’s been loads of fun!

I really liked the relationships between the women in the book too. I love that they formed their own coven, in their own way. I will say, I struggled a bit with the chemistry between Riley and Edison. It seemed a little sudden and forced. Almost like a novella. Again, I loved the relationship between the women a little bit more.

I’m excited to see if there will be another in the series though!

I’m excited to see where I get to write next month’s review and also how many books I’m able to read! I only need 7 more books to complete my 75-book goal for 2023. I cannot believe I’ve read so many books this year. That’s a huge accomplishment from where I was 2 years ago.

How are you doing on your goals?
