Book Review Round-Up (#31)

Okay. I know I say this every time but… what happened to September? I don’t even remember it knocking on the door and It’s Irish exited out without a word! Despite saying “hi” and its swift non-verbal “goodbye”, I somehow managed to get through 9 books this month. Which I’m excited to share because the majority were great!

A part of me is incredibly impressed with myself because I had a lot of family time this month. I was in DC for the first week and read a whole book. Then I had my sister’s wedding with 80% of my external family in town. I don’t know how I made the time. Plus, I read my first fantasy romance novel that was 500+ pages and I read the bulk of this book in 2 whole days!!

Even I’m impressed with myself!

Book Review Round-Up (#31)

Alright, you know the drill. Here are my rules and goals for the month!

But, before we get started… the goals!

  • Listen to 4 audiobooks a month
    • I listened to 6
  • Try different book genres
    • Not great this month but not terrible.
      • Theorist romance (so badass fem-scientist)
      • Fantasy Romance (with dragons!)
      • 2 Witchy Mysteries
      • An independent fundamentalist Baptist biography
      • LGBTQ sequel!
  • Books with POC as the MC (main character) 👩🏻👩🏼👩🏽‍🦳👩🏽👩🏾
    • 0 out of 10 books.
    • Aka 0% of books… Oye. I went off of books available at the library. I didn’t even grab a book written by a POC. This is a major fail and I’m gonna try and be better next month.

Love, Theoretically by Ali Hazelwood

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Format: Physical Book | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

Starting out strong. I LOVED this book. I read the bulk of it in a… night and a half. Ugh, I just. I couldn’t get enough of Elsie and Jack. I have recommended this book to so many of my friends because I really related to Elsie when I was in my twenties.

This was such a close 5 star for me.

Update: I have done nothing but think about this book. This is a 5 star read for me!

Devil in Spring (The Ravenels #3) by Lisa Klypas

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Format: Audiobook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

This was the third in the Ravenels series and though it wasn’t my favorite, it was the most exciting. There were quite a lot of action scenes. Men and their toxic masculinity and the women rolling their eyes at them.

I loved that Pandora owned her own board game business as a woman and refused to give it up upon marriage. Full of feminism and all around delightful.

Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Format: Physical Book | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

I died reading this book.

This book made me almost break my book ban.

Generally, I am the woman who avoids everything and anything that’s being hyped. I’m convinced it’s over hyped….

THIS IS NOT OVER HYPED

This book had everything I didn’t even know I loved: Enemies to loves, angst, dragons, plot twists everywhere, suspense. If you wrap one rec from this entire post… pick this one.

OH! Did I mention I read this one? A physical copy and it’s 528 pages. I read the bulk of it in 2 straight days. I could not put it down. 10/10 recommend. LOVED. IT.

A Spell for Trouble by Esme Addison

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Format: Audiobook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

This poor witchy book didn’t stand a chance after my last book so it’s almost unfair to write about it. I liked the idea but didn’t fall in love with any of the main characters. I also couldn’t decide which guy to root for. Even by the end.

Becoming Free Indeed by Jinger Duggar Vuolo

Rating: 3.5 out of 5.

Format: Audiobook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

I wanted to read this book because I grew up watching the Duggar family. Jinger was always one of my favorites. I don’t feel like I have a right to discuss this book because her family’s lifestyle was so different from my own and it was for educational purposes only.

That said, I loved hearing about how she’s learned and grown on her own.

Spells for Forgetting by Adrienne Young

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Format: Audiobook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

My biggest piece of advice is to pick up the physical copy of this book. I listened to the audiobook and would have read Emery (FMC) very differently.

Besides that, I love how this took place on an island off the Puget Sound near Seattle. That the island was magical and had its own entity and it spoke and did whatever it deemed right.

I thought the murder mystery of the small town was enticing and I wanted to know who the killer was. August was easy to fall in love with so fair warning.

Husband Material by Alexis Hall

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Format: Audiobook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

OH! How I love love love love love Oliver and Luc.

Right off the bat, these two stole my heart for the second time in a row. Their witty banter and unrelinquished love for one another just had me over the moon.

They say the weirdest and yet most darling and delicious things to one another. Plus, Luc’s mother is still my favorite character and I was so happy she was in this one too. This book is all about communication as a couple and going against social normalities. For that alone, 4 stars.

Secretly Yours by Tessa Bailey

Rating: 2 out of 5.

Format: Audiobook | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

Sighhhhhhhh….

I’m sorry Tessa Bailey. This one just didn’t sit with me. Fair warning, it’s extra raunchy which made it cringey for me.

I know, I’m sorry, Tessa. I am. I think I’m officially too old for these characters and secret admirers.

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

Format: Physical Book | Goodreads Review | Amazon | Bookshop.org

The third physical book I read this month and I couldn’t put it down. All three books were like that!

Oh my gosh, you guys. I love love love Lucy and Josh. OH! The chemistry! The witty repartee! The slow burn! THE TENSION!

Need, want, will potentially die for. Not to be dramatic. I understand the fandom and why it was turned into. a movie. However, I fear the book will be better than the movie and for that, I don’t know if I can watch it. I’d rather re-read this over and over and over.

Thank you so much for reading all of these summaries! I hope you find a book you want to pick up from this. Please let me know what you guys are reading or if you have any recs! 💕

Happy reading!
