5 Podcast Episode Recommendations

Hello my darling and dear friends! With the state of America and the coronavirus changing to phase 1.5 in Seattle, I’ve been having a hard time getting out of my own head. My vice? Long walks throughout the city with an audio book or a podcast! Here are my 5 Podcast Episode Recommendations for this month.

As I continue to educated myself on black American history, I’ve also been educating myself on: small business entrepreneurship and ethical sustainability. I want to channel my energy into just being a better human being. I imagine many of you feel the same way.

I’m here to say: you’re not alone.

So, lets get into these 5 Podcast Episode Recommendations!
5 Podcast Episode Recommendations // Don't Keep Your Day Job // On the Trip Side
One // Don’t Keep Your Day Job – Episode 41

Let get right into this post! The first episode I want to unlock is entitled Patrice Washington Tell Us How to Earn More Money & Have More Wellbeing.

I love this episode for a number of reasons:

  1. Patrice’s raw honestly on discussing her childhood and manifesting the life she has now, as an entrepreneur. (Its so inspiring.)
  2. Her candidness in this interview made me tear up at times. Hearing her talk about her first miscarriage and then going through almost the same experience again, all while trying to put her work first.

She is a true pioneer in her financial speaking business, which she started after simply asking herself: what are you good at?

Two // A Sustainable Mind Podcast – Episode 74

My second podcast rec is called Sustainable Fashion and Mindfulness. An episode with Kamea Cayne (of the Green Dreamer Podcast) and the host have very frank conversations about:

  1. What actually brings us joy and fulfillment as a society vs individually.
  2. How fast fashion has become a “retail therapy” which inevitably becomes an unhealthy addiction to buying cheap clothing.
  3. The 2013 Bangladesh garment factory collapse (that killed 1,134 people). Arguing how low-cost clothing requires minimal insight into what factories brand’s are using. Never-the-less their working conditions.

Really insightful and a great first intro into mindful eco-fashion.

Three // Green Dreamer – Episode 48

Third up on this list is entitled: Beginner’s Tips to Sustainable Fashion. Kasi Martin, the guest, is the owner of The Peahen blog. Kasi and Kamea, the host, chat about the different types of sustainable fashion from shopping local, eco-friendly, supporting sustainable packaging and shopping, etc. It’s a fantastic listen for those trying to find their true ecological niche in sustainable fashion.

They touch on a bit of history with fast fashion and how the media has changed the term “sweatshop” to merely being “factory workers”. Which challenges our society into believing the break away of sweatshops has dissolved. When, in actuality: they’re very much alive and running to this day (and remain in poor working conditions).

Four // Side Hustle Pro – Episode 156

Fourth up! This episode I actually listened to last year during my commute but it was so impactful that I had to share. The host, Nicaila Matthews Okome, is so amazing that I became an active subscriber after listening to just one of her episodes. Nicaila interviews other black women entrepreneurs to hear their story from their side hustle to creating a full line businesses.

This episode is called How This Nurse Started Her Natural Skincare Business On The Side. Nicailia interviews Aliyah Jenkins who owns an all-natural, organic skincare line (Body Treats) that she started after her son was born with eczema. She touches on not being heard as a nurse and how she saw a gap in holistic lotions and she decided to fill it. A great Side Hustle success story.

Five // It Never Gets Old – Episode June 4th, 2020

Lastly, Seven Black-Owned Secondhand Stores to Support. This podcast is fantastic and all about recycling clothing. This episode is, sadly, only 9 minutes. I’m kind of surprised she wasn’t able to add more than the 7 secondhand black owned stores. However, it was easy to search for others on google.

Meredith Fineman, the host, encourages her listeners to support black owned businesses and to invest/patron the black community through this episode. She also talks briefly about each store and their online presence. She has them listed in her episode notes for easy access.

That’s it, ya’ll!

I hope you all enjoyed this post on my 5 Podcast Episode Recommendations for this month. Hope you all are staying happy, healthy and safe out there.
