Why Walking is the Best Transportation while Traveling

Hello, my darlings! I’d like to start by saying: I’m not here to convince you Why Walking is the Best Transportation while Traveling. However, the majority of the time, it is. Especially when visiting a new city or leisurely traveling.

Walking is, by far, the superior mode of transport.

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know I’m an avid solo traveler. I also make a point to walk 2.5 to 5.5 miles a day. It’s how I spend the bulk of my mornings, with a travel mug of early grey tea and an audiobook (borrowed from the library).

Why Walking is the Best Transportation while Traveling

Walking is particularly beneficial in a major city. Sure, catching the subway in New York or the metro in Paris is a fun experience. You should definitely use it if you’re trying to be efficient or on a schedule.

For me, walking is the time to be present. When my mom and I traveled to the UK, we were in a tiny village and I turned to her and said “can you believe we’re here?! In the middle of nowhere, England. Just you and me! Going to a pub! Everything looks like Harry Potter.”

There’s something about the slow pace of walking that makes it perfect for soaking in adventure.

It’s the best way to get your bearings

When I first moved to Seattle, I learned my cardinal directions by the placement of the Space Needle and the Puget Sound. If the Space Needle was behind me, I was North of Seattle. If both were on my left, I was on the Eastside, etc.

The same goes while traveling. When I left my Airbnb in Barcelona, I knew I needed to turn by the delicious Pastisseria Escribà to get back. P.s. recommended for wild treats and morning espresso.

Getting lost can be humbling and educational

There is nothing more humbling than trying to tell a Polizei officer in Germany that you’re lost and are looking for the train station. Even more humbling when you find out your German is trash and their English is AMAZING. He was sweet, btw, and kindly point out the correct building for me so I wouldn’t get more lost.

These memories you don’t forget and remind you to repay kindness when you can.

Stumble on something new and amazing

This is my favorite part about traveling. Especially while in Europe. There are hundreds of little chocolate shops, creperies, statues, monuments, etc that you’d never find unless you were walking. Many people will only visit the “it” places on social media. Instead, why not try the Mom & Pops restaurant that’s been in business for 65 years and doesn’t have ratings on Google?

One of the best stews of my life was in Toledo, Spain at a random restaurant that was built underground that wasn’t on Yelp. I also came across a jewelry store where I made friends with the jeweler. He worked on his English and I got a discount on 2 pairs of handmade earrings that I cherish. I’d never met him if I wasn’t wandering.

It’s healthy!

Walking is good for managing blood pressure, type two diabetes, and heart disease. It’s also healthy to get fresh clean air and sunlight exposure.

Great Exercise

Honestly, walking is great cardio and can help manage weight balance. I like it because it helps burn extra calories for large travel meals (and extra wine). Plus, no need to find a gym!

Amazing for mental health, reducing stress & meditation

Though I recommend everyone have a therapist, walking is a good alternative. It’s a tremendous mood enhancer because you’re getting endorphins. It also helps you think, problem-solve, gives you time to plan your next excursion, etc. In short, it’s a great stress reducer.

Saves money & reduces your carbon footprint

Unless you’re walking through a major theme park, walking is 100% free. You save money and reduce your carbon footprint by not taking mass transportation or taxi. This is especially beneficial during rush hour.

Perfect time to multitask

This is my favorite thing about walking! As you guys know I love a BOGO deal. Getting two for one is just a bonus!

Here are some great ways to multitask while walking:

  • Listen to Audiobooks
  • Call someone
  • Listen to your favorite podcast
  • Hit your walking goals on Strava
  • Create your own walking tour!
  • Make a mental list of the places you want to visit or what you want to see
  • Start a challenge for yourself while you walk (like 4 miles in 55 mins, etc)
  • Use creative thinking (make notes for your blog, projects or freelance business, etc)
  • Meditate
  • Take pictures for social media

It tires out the kids

Adding this one for the parents! This is a big one. Walking not only gives your kids a sense of adventure but it also tires them out. A good night’s sleep is a requirement while traveling and walking all day will surely help with that.

Thanks for reading, my friend! Hope you enjoyed my reasons Why Walking is the Best Transportation while Traveling!

Two questions for you:

  1. Do you have any other reason why walking is the best transportation?
  2. What’s your favorite memory you’ve made while exploring a new city?

Happy walking!
