How to Spend Valentine’s Day Alone

First of all, I’d like to start this by saying I’m not completely opposed to this lovey-dovey day. However, I do want to get the record straight because 99% of those celebrating do not know what they are celebrating. So, yes, here’s How to Spend Valentine’s Day Alone… but here’s also what’s up about Saint Valentine.

The story: Valentine was a former bishop who was beaten and BEHEADED on February 14th.

So, to confirm: Valentine’s day is the day he died. There are a lot of tales about St. Valentine’s but here’s the gist:

  • He was imprisoned for marrying Christian couples and his beliefs. More specifically, marring in secret so husbands didn’t have to go to war.
  • While in prison, the Judge tested St. V’s faith by asking him to give his blind daughter sight – he did. The judge released all the Christian inmates and converted.
  • After trying to convert more people to Christianity, and aiding the prosecuted against the emperor, St. V was arrested again. The emperor demanded he renounce his faith – St. V refused. He was sentenced to death.
  • On the day of execution he sent a letter to the girl he gave sight to and signed it “Your Valentine.”

How to Spend Valentine’s Day Alone

NOW we may move forward with this list!

If I’m being completely honest, I’m not a romantic person. Like many others, I love to approach Valentine’s Day as a self-care day but I don’t soak myself in milk baths with rose petals (in general), nor am I into eating a box of chocolates. So… this day isn’t my thing but it’s a reminder to give yourself extra appreciation.

Go on a morning stroll

In fairness, I do this every day anyway but getting out for a walk is perfect for meditation and reflection. I love making a tumbler full of tea and wandering for 30 to 45 minutes to wake myself up. I’ll often think about what I need to do for the day and also my affirmations.

Buy flowers

Buy yourself flowers a week before (they’ll be less expensive). Better yet, swing by all your girlfriends’ homes and drop off a single flower as an appreciation of your friendship.

Plan a happy hour with your girlfriends

This is something you should try to do every few weeks anyway. It’s good for your mental health to surround yourself with loved ones and people who brighten your world. Consider celebrating an epic Galentine’s Day on the 13th instead.

Remind yourself that the grass isn’t always greener on the other side

Listen – relationships are work. Today you get sole ownership of the remote, you can eat whatever you want and you are a brilliant and accomplished human being who finds happiness in everyday things. 😉 See what I did there?

Keep yourself occupied

I love grabbing a book, settling on the couch with a fireplace cracking on youtube. 😅 Here are some fantastic things to do when avoiding the Valentine’s Day events.

  • Color and listen to music
  • Read a new book
  • Catch up on podcasts
  • Plan your next vacation
  • Workout (yoga, virtual dance class, etc)
  • Catch up on your favorite youtube channels
  • Go on a Hike
  • Start a new hobby (learn a new coffee drink, sewing, kick boxing)
  • Binge watch a new series or line up your favorite movies!

Take care of yourself

Yep – in every sense of the word. Eat well, work out, relax your mind, be kind to yourself and love yourself!

When all else fails: skip the entire holiday

See above – beheadeddddd.

This Hallmark Holiday is entirely skippable and I 10 out of 10 recommend it. I skip it every year, with or without a partner. You don’t need a single day of the year to tell someone you love them. For the two of you to feel obligated by society to buy outlandishly overpriced flowers, chocolates, and lingerie?

No merci, mon amies. #skip

I wonder if I sound bitter and angry? Haha. If so it’s primarily because I feel as if society has duped me into celebrating a holiday without educating anyone of the history of it! #TheMoreYouKnow. Right?

Regardless of how you spend the day, have a happy and adventurous one.
