The Best 7 Things to Do Solo in Munich

Another wonderful stop on my 8-week sabbatical abroad was none other than world-famous Munich. From the medieval architecture to the largest pretzels you’ve ever seen, Germany has been on my bucket list for years. Being able to go during the holiday season was a dream – especially since it started snowing while I was there. Even though it was absolutely frigid, I watched the ice skaters, grabbed a hot beverage, and soaked in every morsel of holiday spirit solo.

The Best 7 Things to Do Solo in Munich

Visit Nymphenburg Palace

Oh friends, I absolutely loved this museum. It ended up being one of my favorites of the whole trip. I went on a cold, snowy, sleet-filled day – took Munich’s transportation and then walked the rest of the way. Stepping onto the grounds was absolutely mind-blowing. I always forget how small we are when we’re surrounded by something so grandiose.

This palace felt extra special because it wasn’t crowded at all. I didn’t feel rushed or alone – just the right amount of other tourists around, and I could move at a steady, slow pace in this warm historical setting. The ballroom (first photo!) was so stunning, my heart actually skipped a beat. 💕

If you’re looking for a way to meet others, Viator has a great tour that includes the Palace and the Carriage Museum!

BMW Museum & Welt

Sleek, futuristic, and surprisingly fascinating… even if you’re not into cars. This isn’t something I would normally add to a Munich bucket list, but it’s truly the perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon. BMW is a world-known brand with other names under its umbrella, so you’ll see a fleet of Rolls-Royces, Minis, and Motorrads at BMW Welt. Then head over to the BMW Museum for exhibits covering their design, technology, and motorcycle history.

Don’t worry! There’s a restaurant on site (because it’s huge!), along with shops and tours if you’re interested.

Viktualienmarkt

You guys, this is Munich’s open-air food market! It’s stocked full of local produce, cheeses, and flowers. It’s been open since 1807 and is beloved by tourists and locals alike. There’s also a beer hall and a food hall attached. If you want healthy options on the road or just want to wander somewhere lively and atmospheric, this spot is a must.

Marienplatz Christkindlmarkt/Ice Skating at Karlsplatz

The iconic main square market is darling with its twinkling lights, gingerbread hearts, and (of course) mulled wine. What I loved about Munich, though, is that it’s one of the few cities I visited with an ice-skating rink right in the town square. You can skate under the stars with hot cocoa – a Hallmark movie dream come true!

Neuschwanstein Castle

If I had a do-over on my trip, I would have rented a car or booked a tour to visit Neuschwanstein Castle in Hohenschwangau, Germany. This stunning 19th-century castle might look familiar because it inspired Walt Disney’s Cinderella Castle at Disneyland and in the 1950s animated film.

The interior is breathtakingly medieval with rich dark wood furnishings, dramatic fireplaces, and ornate gold chandeliers. Photos do not do it justice. And truly, you can never go wrong with a Viator tour in my opinion. There are several options, ranging from full-day experiences to shorter visits.

Next time I am in Munich, this will be at the very top of my list. I highly recommend adding it to yours too.

Munich Old Town Walking Tour

I find the best way to learn about any new city is to book a tour. Bonus points if it includes a snack, but mostly I’m just there to explore and learn. Tours are a great way to meet people from all walks of life; I’ve often made friends and gone on adventures with them afterward.

This Munich Old Town Walking Tour looks perfect for that kind of experience. Wandering through Munich’s Bavarian roots feels like the ideal fairytale backdrop.

Classic Munich Bike Tour with Beer Garden stop

Another amazing Viator tour on this list because… who doesn’t love a bike tour? And friends – this one comes with a Beer Garden stop! I’m not a beer drinker, but I’m certain they’ll have alternatives. It’s such a fun way to learn, get a little workout in, and meet new friends along the way. 10/10 would add to cart the next time I’m in Munich.
