My Favorite European Christmas Markets
I cannot believe this year will mark two whole Christmases since I quit my job to travel for eight months. During that time, I made a point to visit some of the world’s most magical holiday markets – both the famous ones and the hidden gems. It was a time I’ll never forget.
I spent a full four weeks traveling solo, making friends along the way, sipping mulled wine, and getting into the Christmas spirit in the most festive way imaginable.
Today, I’m sharing my favorite markets along with a few of my blog posts and stories from those travels. I hope you enjoy, and please share your favorite markets in the comments below. 💕
My Favorite European Christmas Markets

Cologne, Germany
Cologne was such a wonderful surprise. I chose to go there on a whim and absolutely fell head over heels for the people and the sense of community.
There are markets scattered all around the city, but the main one (set right in front of the Cologne Cathedral) is pure magic. It’s one of the only markets filled with handmade items from local artists and craftspeople. There were so many beautiful pieces perfect for gifts or decor.
I adored this market and brought home handblown glass ornaments for my tree and a wooden hair clip crafted from Black Forest wood. Truly unforgettable.

Munich, Germany
A large city with an even larger holiday market! If you love good food, charming ornaments, and gingerbread cookies, Munich is the place for you.
I adored wandering the streets, popping into the different markets, and watching the live choir and instrumental performances. Every market had its own themed mugs for hot mulled wine, and this was the only one where I brought my holiday mug and took it home with me as a souvenir.

Vienna, Austria
Vienna’s food scene might have been my favorite of all. At the Schönbrunn Palace market, I had this incredible bread bowl filled with beef and potatoes that completely revived my freezing fingers and heart.
The market at Rathausplatz (City Hall Square) was also stunning, with twinkling lights and a fairytale backdrop. Just know – it’s packed. You’re never truly alone in Vienna’s Christmas markets, but that’s part of the beauty.
Bruges, Belgium
The cutest and sweetest small market I’ve ever been to. Bruges feels like it was made for Christmas. Between the Belgian waffles, hot chocolate, and bicycles, it’s straight out of a storybook. You can easily take a day trip from Brussels by train, and trust me, it’s absolutely worth it!

Strasbourg, France
I only stayed one night in Strasbourg many years ago, but it left such a lasting impression. I’d love to return someday, along with Colmar, which is just as dreamy. It’s a beautiful train ride from Paris, and the town itself is pure charm. Start your morning with a fresh croissant and end it with vin chaud!
