Bruges Christmas Market: A Hallmark Day Trip with a Twist

Hello, my wonderful Tripsters! Nestled in the far northwest of Belgium, like a scene out of a Hallmark movie, Bruges stole my heart this holiday season. This charming town, with its picturesque church, quaint shops, and storybook-like townhomes, truly embodied the magic of Christmas. Little did I know that my day trip to this fairytale destination would take an unexpected turn.

You guessed it – if you’ve been following along on this 3 Weeks of Christmas Market adventure, I got a nasty cold in Amsterdam and it continued for a week and a half.

So, even though I loved Bruges and recommend it to anyone traveling around Belgium, I wasn’t at 100% human capacity so I didn’t do nearly as much as I’d hoped. Please bear that in mind in this travel journal.

Bruges Christmas Market: A Hallmark Day Trip with a Twist

A Hallmark Day Trip… with a Twist

Bruges unfolded before me like the perfect Christmas card. However, the idyllic scenes came with an unexpected twist – my terrible cold. I explored the darling Christmas Market for just a couple of hours before my health took a nosedive. Like, truly an unexpected turn that made it impossible for me to stay after dark.

Despite it being a brief visit, it left an indelible mark! However, the reality of solo travel is not always captured in the glossy images. Right? This is real life and I try to keep it honest.

The Easy Day Trip: Navigating Bruges

Regardless of my short day trip, I can’t help but emphasize how easy it is to get to Bruges. The hour-long train ride from Brussels was not only simple but also fun because I got to see the Belgian countryside.

It’s a scenic walk through the town too. You can take a bus but Google Maps assured me it was a 20-minute walk to the market and I wanted the fresh air after the train ride. This made it a super feasible experience, especially for a solo traveler.

The convenience of reaching this little winter wonderland and being surrounded by its charm made it worth investing in an ornament for my tree…

Hidden Treasures: Beautiful Christmas Stands and Homemade Ornaments

Speaking of – Bruges delivered on having handmade Christmas items in their stands!

The stands, decorated with festive cheers, showcased the craftsmanship of local artisans. Even after a disappointing search in Brussels, I stumbled upon a beautiful homemade Christmas ornament. Bruges impressed me and was what I thought Brussels was going to be like.

The market was calm with horse-drawn carriages roaming the cobbled streets. There was fun festive music to keep the spirit merry and bright. I just loved it!

Honesty in Solo Travel Blogging

As a solo travel blogger, transparency is key. While my Bruges experience wasn’t all gleaming snowflakes and festive cheer, it’s a testament to the real, unfiltered side of exploration. Sometimes, it’s not about the perfect shot but the genuine journey.

Bruges, despite its unexpected challenges, proved to be a memorable hallmark day trip. Literally through sniffles and sneezes (ugh). I discovered how easy it is to have a quick getaway abroad solo. Thanks for reading this non-picture-perfect Bruges Christmas Market and exploring it unscripted with me while solo traveling!
