Doing the Impossible: Taking a Break From Social Media

Hello, darlings!

Life has been a whirlwind lately—scratch that, a full-on tornado! The past two weeks have been a rollercoaster of anxiety, and at the heart of it? Social media.

Let’s talk about doom-scrolling. It has completely taken over my life, and honestly, I’ve hit my breaking point. If you’re in the U.S., you know we’re collectively going through… a lot. The constant stream of news, opinions, and updates is overwhelming. Sure, social media has its fun and educational moments, but lately, it’s felt like a never-ending tidal wave of tragedy.

So, after an epically rough week (more on that later), I’ve decided to do something that feels borderline impossible: I’m taking a social media hiatus!

Doing the Impossible: Taking a Break From Social Media

Here’s my plan to thrive offline: pack my days with fun, creative, and fulfilling activities. Here’s everything I’m diving headfirst into:

Hobbies

First up, soap making! This has been on my to-do list for over six months, and I’m finally doing it. I’ve stocked up on all-natural ingredients, essential oils, and no synthetics—plus, they’ll be tree-nut free! My sister has a severe nut allergy, and I know others do too, so I’m making sure these are allergy-friendly. I cannot wait to create something beautiful, bubbly, and all mine!

Next: sourdough bread. Yep, I’m jumping on the sourdough train. I skipped the pandemic trend because, honestly, who needs a whole loaf of bread when you’re just one person? But now that I’ve got friends and family nearby, I’m going to try mini demi-loaves. Wish me luck—I hear it’s a workout!

Oh, and let’s not forget my first love: books. I’m diving deep into my 2025 reading list, starting with Iron Flame and Onyx Storm. After that, it’s game on with my ever-growing TBR stack.

Lastly, sewing! My poor sewing projects have been collecting dust, but not anymore. I’ve got a dreamy 1980s apron pattern I’ve been swooning over for a year, and at least 12 other patterns to tackle. This hiatus is my chance to finally get organized and create!

Socializing (IRL)

Social media might be on pause, but my real-life connections are getting a glow-up!

Dinner with friends: Once a week, I’m exploring new spots near my house or in the city. A chance to have fun and try new things!

Book club: I started one with two girlfriends, and we’ll be picking our first book soon. I’m so excited to step out of my usual romance comfort zone!

Family dinners/coffee dates: Weekly with my family. We used to do sunday dinners all the time but we got so busy it dropped off. I’m excited to start that back up again, especially for mom’s cooking!

Exercising

Fitness is front and center during this break.

  • Yoga and Pilates 3x a week.
  • Gym sessions 3–4x a week.
  • Exploring nearby trails—and maybe even buying a bike!

I’m already desperate for endorphins and dopamine hits.

Volunteering

I’ll be looking for opportunites in my area. This has been top of mind for me this year as I give back to my community and also build a community of my own.

Exploring

While I’m stepping back from big travel plans, I’m itching to explore closer to home.

  • Coastal hikes.
  • Day trips.
  • Long weekends at the beach.

Needless to say, I’ll be getting loads of fresh air.

It’s going to be a wild ride, but I’m ready! I’ll document my journey and share it all here instead of on some platform that could vanish in a heartbeat.

Wish me luck as I navigate withdrawals, rediscover joy offline, and see if I can truly build a meaningful community without social media.
