This is The Craziest Challenge I’m Accepting Yet…
My family always laughs at me because I’m “always doing something”. I love a challenge. I put a lot of thought into each one to see if I’ll be able to be successful. Examples are:
- Rowing and adding a minute, every day for 30 days.
- Walking 6 days a week for 2 months.
- Drinking 64oz of water daily (Don’t do this, I O.D.’d on H2O)
- Only spend $25 a week on groceries for a month.
- No spend month.
- Not eating fast food and going out to eat for 3 months.
They were always budget, food, and exercise-related because I was working hard to pay off my student loans. In the end, each really helped me maintain a budget and, honestly, I was able to pay off my loans faster because of them.
Now, I’m naturally a competitive person. So, even paying off my student loans became a game… but I love competing! Especially against myself.
This is why I think This is The Craziest Challenge I’m Accepting Yet… Creating a Me-Made Wardrobe.
This is The Craziest Challenge I’m Accepting Yet…
I know, you guys.
“But Alli, you work for a huge retail company during your 9-5… AND get a great discount!”
Trust me, I know. It’s going to be hard but I think I’ll be okay if I have rules! There are a lot of items I cannot make. Right?
The Craziest Challenge
The ultimate plan is to not buy any clothing for the remainder of the year. 😬 Gah! Is this crazy?
I’ve been having a hard time finding clothing I really love. I realized I was looking at pieces but wishing the fabric was completely different or it had pockets or that the placements of the pockets were somewhere else. You know?
Plus, I really like the idea of owning pieces no one else is going to have. What are the odds of having the same fabric, pattern, and personal spin that my design will have? Slim. And I love that.
So, the challenge is to make clothing I genuinely love and will wear over and over that’ll make me happy.
Challenge Rules
- 3/4 of my fabric needs to be from a thrift store, secondhand, vintage, or dead stock.
- Keep all my scraps and make something out of them for less waste.
- Items I can buy if I need them: sportswear, shoes, non-fabric accessories, socks, and underwear. (Aka. things I cannot make)
Challenge Goals
- Improve my sewing skills! With every project.
- Be able to be good enough for people to not be able to know I made it!
- Add pockets to everything.
- Create different types of pants.
- Try linen fabric!
- At least one pair of jeans.
- More summer skirts and tops.
- Learn to alter patterns and draft my own!
- Try knit fabrics in Fall & Winter.
- Use light-colored fabric. I’ve over dark colors.
- Learn to sew chiffon & rayon!
- Turn my hobby into a skill that could (if I wanted) be profitable.
I’m planning to share my makes. Maybe in a wrap-up post every season!
Regardless, I’m super excited to begin. I’m not 1000% certain I’ll be able to do this challenge but I think it’ll save some money and help my creativity come back! That’s something I’m willing to attempt.
