23 Things I Miss About New York

This summer wasn’t my favorite in Seattle. The whole season, I was thinking about my annual trip to New York when I was a kid. My Mom would drop me off at the PDX gate and my Aunt would pick me up at the New York gate. I loved it. I loved flying and getting a new set of wing and I especially loved the humidity that hit you when you walk off the plane.

New York was mine for 2 to 3 weeks and Ioved it, every year. I spent the summers running along the ocean on the sand, chasing the ice cream man with my spare change and dancing in the sprinklers at my cousin’s Long Island home. They had the best block parties and epic parks filled with lightening bugs.

Much later as an adult, I got to experience life in New York City every quarter for work. I finally got to experience New York in the winter … and hated it. Haha! The wind literally hurt my face! It was -2*. I didn’t even know weather could get that low!

However, I tried many cocktails to warm me up. I swear it’s the perfect pick-me-up when it’s freezing in New York. So, it wasn’t all bad. I got to try out a ton of different bars from the Upper East Side to Brooklyn.

As you can see, I’m totally nostalgic and if it weren’t for those insanely cold winters, I would probably live in upstate somewhere. In the mean time though, I’m here to reminisce about the 23 Things I Miss About New York.

Pulled from the archives! Look at my dark brown hair!

23 Things I Miss About New York

There’s something really special about New York City but not a lot of people talk about Long Island. Sure you know about the Hamptons but most people don’t know that the Hamptons are ON Long Island! I’m a little bias because I still have family out there but, it’s truly a special place in my heart for it. I can’t wait to go back again.

  1. The Hamptons beach
  2. Being 16 and driving to the beach with my cousin, all the windows rolled down blasting Missy Elliot
  3. Carvel’s soft serve ice cream with rainbow sprinkles
  4. Long Island accents (all new york accents, really)
  5. Warm bagels with schmear
  6. How diverse the state is
Spring Street Subway Station
  1. Oversized Yankee tattoos on every body part imaginable
  2. A street hot dog with mustard (just mustard)
  3. Ice cream man truck music (and lemon Italian ice in a tube)
  4. Backyard pools filled with neighbors and other kids
  5. Feeling nervous that I wasn’t cool enough to be at the mall (small town girl, over here)
  6. Warm buttered rolls from 7-11
  7. Arriving in Grand Central Station
  8. How efficient the subway system is
  9. Running to the grocery store, with my uncle, at 11:45am to buy beer & liquor… only to wait 15 minutes to check out because it’s Sunday (and you can’t by liquor til noon on Sundays)
Club Sandwich at a Diner in Long Island
  1. There’s always something to do, especially in the city
  2. Rockefeller Center during Christmas (there’s nothing like it)
  3. Sitting on the docks of Port Jeff Station
  4. Eating extra cheese pizza with so much grease, it runs down your arm
  5. Running through lightening bugs and trying to catch them
  6. The window displays at Bergdorf Goodman
  7. Picnics in the park with my entire extended family… and their extended family 😅
  8. 24 hour diners that treat you like family

There’s about a million other reasons but these one stand out the most to me. Thanks for reading my list. Have you been to New York? What’s you’re favorite things and what do you miss the most?
