8 Reasons to Stay on a Farm While Traveling

Here’s the deal, there is nothing more spacious and organic than a farm. No really! Think about this. Not only are you staying in a cool unique location, you’re also getting a unique experience than any other hotel accommodation. Depending on the kind of farm you go to, there are always opportunities to connect with your host to see if you can engage with animals or help pick flowers, eggs, etc. Welcome to the 8 Reasons to Stay on a Farm While Traveling.

I’ve have had my fair share of unique travel stay experiences. From riads in Marrakech, private room shares in Kailua, Hawaii to a penthouse above a Mexican restaurant in California. One of my all time favorite experiences was being on a sunflower farm in Phoenix, Oregon (just outside of Ashland).

It was not only so peaceful but I woke up to chickens on my front stoop and Buckley, the golden retriever, running to greet me when I stepped out of my car. I also woke up to farm fresh eggs, in the fridge, from said stoop chickens!

Staying on a farm is another kind of world and I am here for it. Here are 8 reasons you should be too.

Supporting Local

You literally cannot support any more local than staying on a farm. It’s not only a great experience for you but the extra income from your stay can help hire on help for the harvest seasons or new equipment.

There is also a great option to “workstay” at many farms. In which, you literally get accommodations for your work on the farm. Another win/win. Much of the work is early morning chores but then you generally have the rest of the afternoon to yourself. Something to think about for budget travelers.

You can find farms on Airbnb or Farm Stay USA.

Learning Opportunities

Farms are educational. There is so much to learn about farming, seasonal vegetable growth, what alpacas eat, where chickens like to roam, etc. Host are generally very enthusiastic to inform. If you have kids, a farm stay is a fantastic idea, especially to keep their learnings up over the summer vacation.

A lot of farms also offer super unique classes. Here are are some examples of ones I’ve seen:

  • Cheese making
  • Goat yoga/regular yoga
  • Photography
  • Cooking/Baking
  • Knitting
  • Yarn spinning
  • Woodshop making
  • Art
  • Horseback riding

Unique Experiences

Not a lot of people are going out and staying on a farm for a week or weekend. That in itself is pretty awesome but what I love that most is how much you’ll get to experience there. You’ll be around acres of land filled with hay, bee hives, u-pick fruits, veggies and/or flowers. Not to mention the wild life.

Farm Fresh Everything

I’m an Oregon-girl at heart and here to tell you: There is nothing in this world that is better than farm fresh everything.

Have you ever picked a peach right off the branch on a hot summer day? With the fruit so ripe the juice is literally dripping down your arm??

I have. Again – nothing better.

If they have their produce for sale, make sure to support them and buy, buy, buy! From fresh eggs, herbs, honey, marionberry pie and so much more. Also, make sure to ask if their neighbors sell anything too. They can see if they can arrange a drop off or pick up of goods. Neighbors sometimes sell jams, jelly, bread, etc. You never know!

Super Friendly Hosts

Never have I ever met more kind hosts than those who own a farm. As mentioned in my Visiting a Farm for the First Time post, this is not your property but they’ll treat you like family none-the-less so please be respectful. You follow their rules, you’ll have an amazing time no matter what.

On my stay my host gave me farm fresh eggs, local cheese and milk in the fridge with a sticker to their farm. They checked in to make sure I had everything for my stay, my journey home and made sure I knew everything possible about their town. They left a guide book and kept a log of news related items in town and gave great advice on restaurants, etc. If you are traveling, ask your host. They hold all the knowledge!

Their kindness made me feel right at home. I shared my experience all over social media because I was so comfortable.

Fantastic Photo Ops

There, I said it. Haha. I spent a solid hour taking photos in a Sunflower field and I’m not ashamed to admit it. I had the best time. Get creative, have fun, hashtag your farm because their social media presence isn’t their number 1 priority. Therefore, they rely on guests to share their experiences through word of mouth.

Relaxing Stay

It really doesn’t matter if your there to learn or not. Farm life, is slow life. If you’re looking to take your mind off work, destress and sit next to a cherry tree to read your book…. you can do that.

It’s generally quiet and peaceful. Especially in the mornings.

Space

Three words: Back country roads.

If you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of people, a farm is perfect for you. There’s room to dance, roll around in the grass, chase your kids and bike to town. The “scenic route” is every route on a farm. You will see acres of grass, hay, corn, apple orchards, vineyards and so much more.
