5 Ways to Romanticize Winter Even When It’s Gray

Being a winter person comes with a reputation. People love to poke fun the second it snows or on a particularly cold, rainy day (especially in the PNW – “why live here?”). But the thing about winter isn’t the cold or even the rain… it’s the constant grey: grey sky, grey roads, grey buildings, rain-soaked sidewalks, the steam from your coffee, December morning light… sweaters, cars – the list goes on.

It can feel depressing. (It’s also why I gave away every grey item in my closet.)

But the truth is: I’ve been romanticizing winter since moving to Seattle 13 years ago, and it’s honestly become my superpower. Here’s how I do it.

5 Ways to Romanticize Winter Even When It’s Gray

1. Slow Down and Be Present

Most people move slower in winter anyway, but being present takes intention. Sometimes it means mixing up your routine – even just a few days a week so you don’t derail your entire rhythm.

A few ideas:

  • Wake up 20 minutes early to journal.
  • Use a physical planner to be creative and intentional (you know I love mine).
  • Be thoughtful about where (and with whom) you spend your time.
  • Give when you can: time, money, small gifts, anything.
  • And the one rule I swear by: don’t go back to bed. It’s 9x harder to get up the second time.

2. Explore even in the Cold and Rainy

You know what doesn’t sound romantic? Exercise.

But honestly, moving your body is one of the kindest things you can do for both your mood and your mental health.

  • Find a new park or an easy winter hike.
  • Make a pact with yourself to go outside for at least 10–20 minutes a day.
  • Bring a vintage thermos or travel mug of homemade tea to make your stroll feel charming and intentional.

3. Make and Create at Home

One of the most romantic things you can do during winter is create something from scratch. It’s not just productive – it’s dreamy, grounding, and a lovely way to learn new skills.

Try things like:

  • Cooking for health and joy (and for others!).
  • Making your own tea: cinnamon stick + sliver of raw ginger + honey.
  • Making soap from scratch.
  • Pouring candles into vintage dishes (make sure they’re safe!).
  • Starting a scrapbook or setting aside weekly creative time.
  • Building a little winter vision board.

4. Give up Tech in the Evenings (or Mornings)

I know this sounds harsh, but social media can be a dream-killer – especially Instagram. Taking a break, even a gentle one, does wonders.

Replace screen time with:

  • Puzzles
  • Books
  • Games
  • Crafting

I still listen to audiobooks while I puzzle or clean, and I often play lofi or slow jazz while reading or decorating my planner. Being away from screens isn’t just for kids – it’s grounding for adults, too. 💕

5. Get out and Support your Local Businesses

This might be the most magical way to romanticize winter – though it can be expensive. The good news? You can always browse and share your favorite spots on social media as a way to support them.

Try:

  • Finding a new bakery or coffee shop
  • Visiting local bookshops, yarn stores, mini marts, and boutiques
  • Becoming a regular at a spot with a barista who knows your order
  • Filling your life with community, not just things

Supporting your community is powerful – when you take care of them, they take care of you.

This was such a fun post to write, my friends. I hope you’re getting out and enjoying the winter weather, and if not, I hope these five things help you find a ✨little magic✨ in the grey.
