7 Best Things to do Solo in Queenstown, New Zealand!

This post has been a long time coming, and I’m honestly surprised I haven’t written it sooner because Queenstown, New Zealand, is one of the most beautiful and majestic places I’ve ever had the privilege of visiting.

Queenstown, often called the Adventure Capital of the World, is exactly what you’d expect from a small town set on a sparkling lake surrounded by mountains and topped with a ski resort. It’s the perfect destination for thrill-seekers but still laid-back enough for those who’d rather spend their days strolling, shopping, and taking in the view.

Keep an eye out for my full post on my trip to New Zealand, but for now, let’s dive into my favorite solo adventures in Queenstown.

7 Best Things to do Solo in Queenstown, New Zealand!

Go to the Milford Sound

Okay, I know this is a little controversial because the Milford Sound isn’t technically in Queenstown, but hear me out. Since Queenstown is all about adventure, what better way to experience one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World than by small plane, helicopter, or bus?

I saved up for this trip and booked Viator’s Fly-Cruise-Fly Tour by TrueSouth, and my friends, this was hands down the best tour I’ve ever taken in my life! Not only did I conquer one of my biggest fears (small planes), but I also made friends I still keep in touch with today. I even got to be the co-pilot on our flight! And on the cruise, we saw dolphins. Truly, this was one of those once-in-a-lifetime experiences I’ll never forget. Viator also has a beautiful Coach and Cruise tour too!

Kingpin Indoor Activity and Gaming Center

Keeping with New Zealand’s thrill-seeking theme, there are tons of indoor activities that’ll get your heart racing at Kingpin! They’re great for solo travelers looking to stay active and maybe make a few new friends along the way.

This place has everything — pinball, virtual reality, bowling, iFly indoor skydiving, escape rooms, and karaoke. Honestly? It’s perfect whether you’re on your own or traveling with family.

Wine Tasting Tour

You’re in the heart of New Zealand’s wine country, so why not treat yourself to a few tastings after a long day of adventure? Some of these wines rival my favorite bottles from Washington, Oregon, and California.

Many tours last all day and include lunch. A few great options:

Horse Trek and Cruise Tour

Aside from the small plane adventure, there’s no better way to see New Zealand’s landscape than on horseback. This one was high on my list, though I didn’t manage to squeeze it in. It’s absolutely up my alley and something I plan to do next time.

This particular tour includes a small group experience, an expert guide, a scenic cruise on Lake Wakatipu, and even afternoon tea.

Queenstown Art Markets and Hike Queenstown Hill Time Walk

Queenstown is a darling little town, and with that comes a vibrant market scene. I loved wandering through the main village, browsing local art and handmade goods. I wish I’d brought a bigger suitcase, but it was probably for the best.

If you can, support the local artists! Their work is fantastic. I saw everything from miniature food jewelry to beautiful hand-drawn prints.

Afterward, stretch your legs with a hike on the Queenstown Hill Track. It’s a 4.2 km walk that rewards you with sweeping views of Lake Wakatipu and the surrounding mountains. It’s an easy, manageable solo hike that’s popular with locals.

Get Your Adventure On

At this point, it might sound like this post is sponsored by Viator because most of these tours came from there, but honestly, it’s just my go-to site for booking activities. They even have a points program where you earn cash back toward future adventures, which I love.

Queenstown is packed with extreme sports, and if I ever get the privilege to return, I’m tackling as many as I can. Here are some incredible options:

Onsen Hot Pools and Day Spa

Lastly, after a long day of jumping out of planes, bungee jumping, and ATV rides, calm your mind at Onsen Hot Pools. This spot is absolutely magical in the evening and something that’s still on my bucket list. If you don’t have a car, you can easily Uber there, and trust me, it’s worth it.

Thanks so much for reading, friends! I hope this list of the 7 Best Solo Activities in Queenstown, New Zealand inspires you to book that trip and conquer a few fears!
