The Best 7 Things To Do Solo in Edinburgh, Scotland

Hello again, Tripsiders! Today I’m bringing you back in time to my solo adventure to Edinburgh, Scotland. This trip meant the world to me and holds a special place in my heart. Scotland, with its reminiscent weather of the PNW and shared West Coast values, felt like a second home. Edinburgh, especially the highlands, stole a piece of my soul.

Before diving into our list, here are some adorable Scottish tidbits. Their country’s national animal is the Unicorn! Its legend proclaims that it’s the only animal that can defeat a lion, which as you know, is the national animal of England. Scotland also has roughly 3,000 castles, two of which grace downtown Edinburgh.

The Best 7 Things To Do Solo in Edinburgh, Scotland

I know I don’t normally write about fun facts but I couldn’t help myself. I learned so much during my week-long stay. Now, onto the main event!

Hike Arthur’s Seat

Arthur’s Seat, nestled in Holyrood Park, offers unparalleled views of the city. Many think it’s named after King Arthur but it’s never been confirmed. The 1,000-acre park has been used to help guard the city, allowed hunting stag as a sport for the crown, and once housed an abbey. Now, with an 823 ft hill, it’s one of the most popular hiking trails in Edinburgh due to its stunning rolling hills.

If you have 2 hours out of your day for exercise, it’s worth it. There are so many other tourists and locals alike. It’s the perfect way to meet new people, take photos, and make new friends.

Visit Edinburgh Castle

Exploring Edinburgh Castle is a great solo stop because it’s full of history and you can get a walking audio tour! This historical landmark is visible from almost anywhere in the city. It’s where Mary Queen of Scots sought refuge after her cousin, Elizabeth I, took the throne. It also has some of the best medieval history and some of the crown jewels!

Pro tip: It’s a couple of pounds cheaper to book online! This is a great attraction, rain or shine.

Take a Free Ghost Tour

Fun fact part 2! Edinburgh is considered the most haunted city in all of Scotland and it’s not surprising considering its history with red-headed witches, Edinburgh Castle, and being home to multiple serial killers throughout its 1,000-year-old history.

Book early, especially around Halloween! These guides are tip-based so make sure to leave a fiver or a tenner.

Visit the National Museum of Scotland or the Scottish National Gallery

Dive into Scottish heritage at the National Museum of Scotland or the Scottish National Gallery. Rainy days call for indoor adventures, and these museums deliver. Both are free to the public!

Walk along and shop the Royal Mile

The Royal Mile is just short of a mile but it’s the distance from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to Edinburgh Castle. So, quite literally a royal mile walk. It’s where the original “town” of Edinburgh was. Think of your local butcher, baker, candle stick maker, etc – all within walking distance.

Now you’ll pass the Museum of Edinburgh, The University of Edinburgh, and tons of shops, taverns, and restaurants. It’s a great place to get souvenirs and people-watch. There’s normally a bagpipe player out to greet the crowds.

Tour the Edinburgh Vaults

Another spooky adventure to experience! There’s an entire underground vault beneath the Edinburgh cobblestone. This is supposed to be one of the best tours in the city and promises to make a solo trip memorable. What better way to explore the city than with a small group of strangers?

Whisky Tasting with History and Storytelling

For whisky aficionados, Edinburgh offers tantalizing tastings and immersive storytelling sessions. There are loads of bars, tastings, and liquor shops that specialize in all things whisky! Multiple tours offer small group options. What I love about Viator specifically is so many of their guides will provide restaurants and other local favorites to you if you ask nicely.

This is also a great way to find a local whisky in a short period. Most of the shops will provide international shipping too!

This was a long one but a good one! I hope you found something wonderful to do on your next trip to Edinburgh. If you have any other suggestions, please let me know in the comments below.

Happy adventuring, my friends!

So jealous! I’ve always wanted to go to Scotland. Alas, I think my next international trip will have to be on a year that I don’t buy a house.
