Books & Bottles: A Spy in the Struggle & Airfield’s 2020 Sangiovese Rosé
Y’all… how the heck are we in June? I cannot even. In pure Alli-fashion (fine, procrastination), I am posting late by one whole day. I’m also now a whole month behind and am going to tryyyy and make up for it next month. Fingers crossed. Let us not dwell though! Let’s get into A Spy in the Struggle & Airfield’s 2020 Sangiovese Rosé!
I’m actually really excited to review this book with you guys and tell you all about this wine. This was a good pairing!
The Book: A Spy in the Struggle by Aya de Leon
A brief synopsis:
After giving the FBI exactly what they need to take down her corrupt boss’ law firm, Yolanda Vance turned over her Harvard Law degree for a chance at working for the Bureau. She quickly gets pulled into an undercover job for an African-American youth activist group that believes a major biotech company is destroying their neighborhood and Yolanda’s former college town.
Struggling between her new life and who she used to be. Eventually she needs to choose between the people she grows to adore and her job.
Honest Review:
This year, I have a goal to read more books by black authors and also to read more books with POC as the main character. I had a realization last year that 95% of the books that I have read take place in a small non-diverse town, with a white main character and they rarely come in contact with anyone of color.
This is my second book this year (first one is The Vanishing Half here). Both fiction but this one took place during in the not so distance future as they’re actively talking about the covid-19 pandemic!
I learned quite a lot from this book and the writing is super easy to read. The main character was easy to relate to and I liked her. I was so happy there was a love interest/component… was beginning to think there wouldn’t be. I love nothing more than a FBI thriller with a little love mixed in. At times it was a little slow, I will admit, but it was highly educational.
Due to the activism in this book, I recommend this to everyone, especially woman. They focus on racial injustice, lean into women’s rights and sexual harassment. It was powerful to read moments of anger. Power battles between just and unjust… and the infuriating system that prevents community members for just getting some basic answers to a death that was clearly not properly investigated. Being able to read about the frustration first hand was influential. Again, I recommend this to everyone.
Have you read A Spy in the Struggle? What did you think??
The Bottle: Airfield 2020 Sangiovese Rosé
Alright my lovelies. On to the WINE!
This is Airfield’s 2020 Sangiovese Rosé and I’m not gonna lie… I’ve had this rosé multiple times now and I had to feature it because it’s honestly a staple Spring glass that has been in and out of my fridge since mid April. It’s perfect for reading at the park or just chilling with girlfriends on a patio. Like, truthfully, this bottle is a delight. It has just enough acidity to keep your hot-girl-Summer in check. 💁
What I’m tasting:
Juicy ripe fruity summer watermelon with a subtle tang of strawberries. Yum!
What makes this wine unique:
The grapes for this rosé were harvested later than they were supposed to be due to the heavy Washington State fires this year. Literally the terrible air quality prevented them from being picked. The grapes somehow weren’t effected by the smoke! Can you believe that?!
Also, this wine is also vegan! No normal animal biproducts were used to produce it. A huge plus for my vegan friends. They also have wine notes for it!
Overall wine grade: B+
This bottle goes for $18 but you get 20% if you’re a wine member… 🙋♀️ Guilty! Honestly, this wine is lovely chilled. It would be soooo good in some kind of strawberry goat cheese herb salad. Something nice and light to go with it. Also bonus points because there is something so convenient and easy about a twist cap. It’s truly a great grab and go when you gotta meet the girls.
A Spy in the Struggle & Airfield’s 2020 Sangiovese Rosé might be my favorite pairing yet! I definitely loved the wine from my first books & bottles post but … this one is a great Spring glass. What’s your favorite rosé during Spring?
Can’t wait for next month’s Books & Bottles! 📚
